<description>We are an incorporated society now in our 25th year.

We have a project underway to conserve and archive our photos, many of which have been taken with pocket cameras with small (110?) negatives, and many of which have been donated as prints (without negatives).

We are looking at scanning these but wonder if we are best trying to scan the small negatives or just the prints? And if we are to scan the small negatives, what scanners would be recommended that not expensive! - most &quot;home use&quot; ones seem to just do 35mm and slides.

We are juggling finances and practicality aspects!

Any advice you are able to offer would be very much appreciated.

<description>We are an incorporated society now in our 25th year. Over that time we have generated a small horde of documents both printed and digital.

We have a project underway to conserve and archive our documents, photos and ephemera.

We are looking at scanning our printed documents but wonder what format we should use for future-proofing?! eg are pdf or word formats likely to survive the test of time, or is there another recommended format?

Similarly with scanned photos, what format is best?

And with digital photos that are in a proprietary format, should we be looking a converting them to another format eg jpeg?

The advice on websites is to use &quot;lossless&quot; digital formats but we're not sure what this means in practice!

Any advice you are able to offer would be very much appreciated.

<description>What is the best way to go about digitising maps and construction/architectural designs for including as part of an online digital library?

I've been asked by a project what is the best way to digitize
architectural drawings and maps that are larger than what most
scanners can handle in preparation of loading them into online
collection. What options should I consider?

<description>Should I insert metadata like names and places into digital photos (for example, as EXIF tags in the JPEG files)?

Or am I better to leave my digital photos in their original form and maintain metadata alongside them (for example, as part of the iPhoto library)?

IN 50 years, what will seem like the better choice for a typical computer user?

Thanks in advance.</description>

<description>Can anyone point me to details on the use of Crown Copyright? I am trying to determine if a 1969 DSIR publication is available to digitise and make publicly available. It is assumed to be Crown copyright and I understand Crown copyright material is fairly freely available for republication but I cannot find anything official which says this!

<description>Can you recommend a free software for cataloging a family photograph collection? Some of them are born digital, some are slides, negatives or prints that I have scanned.

I would like to enter basic information of each photo, such as description, date, place, photographer, subject key words and formats that I keep (slide, negative, print, and file format of digital photo eg. tiff or jpeg). Would also be good of course to attach a digital image. A feature like tagging and search with keywords would be useful too.

I have thought of Flicker but I'd like to keep my images &amp; information on my own computer, and keep track of image formats. (How will I keep track of my tiffs and jpgs of the same image?) I understand tiff format is better for long term storage and future needs and jpgs for viewing images on screen.

<description>My library is investigating posting some images onto Flickr. All the images will be out of copyright, but Flickr only provides the options of a creative commons licence, or all rights reserved. Neither of which reflects the nature of the content. I see that Turnbull has used the all rights reserved licence with text around the image stating that it can be used under certain conditions. Other libraries have gone down the CC route. Can we claim all rights reserved when in fact the photo is out of copyright? Can we assign a CC licence when out of copyright?
