I work for a small museum, and we are looking at a project to digitise our photographic collection. Do you know of any funding that might be available for this sort of project? Does DigitalNZ offer funding? [Originally asked by Roslyn on January 23, 2009, on www.digitalnz.org]

DigitalNZ doesn’t offer funding. However, through National Services Te Paerangi, Te Papa has a Grants Programme which includes, the Museum & Iwi Development Grant, the Helping Hands Grant for Small Museums and the NZMuseums Website 1 Year License Fee Grant.

For more information go to Te Papa’s National Services Te Paerangi or call freephone 0508 NSTP HELP (0508 678 743)

You could also contact Lotteries Environment and Heritage who support digitisation initiatives from time to time. Find out about project grants on the Department of Internal Affairs website.

Another useful resource is The Cultural Funding Guide. This is a search engine to help arts, cultural, and heritage organisations match projects with potential funders. It’s hosted by NZLive.com, a cultural portal that went live in September 2006.

The Cultural Funding Guide is a collaboration between National Services Te Paerangi, Creative New Zealand, the Ministry for Culture and Heritage, and the Funding Information Service.

Showing that you have realistically thought about all the stages of your digitisation project may help improve your chance of success. Our downloadable tipsheet gives you some tips on seven things to think about when designing your project. Bear in mind staffing costs too, as you may need additional resources to achieve your goals.

We hope these links are useful, and wish you the best of luck with your attempts to find funding. If anyone else reading this post has suggestions of funding opportunities, we’d love to hear about them in the comments.
